Mission Statement

The Utilities Department’s mission is to protect the safety, health, and welfare of the citizens of Fort Walton Beach and its visitors by providing and maintaining high quality, safe, and reliable drinking water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems. To this end, the employees of the Utilities Department are dedicated to protecting all environmental concerns within our community.

Function

The Utilities Department provides management, leadership, and support to multiple divisions including Water Operations, Sewer Operations, Water Distribution, Sewer Collections, Stormwater Management, and Environmental Programs. The employees of this department are responsible for serving the community by providing quality, safe, and cost effective potable water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, and environmental programs.

Sewer Collections

The Sewer Collections Division (850-833-9613) maintains forty-one lift stations, two pump stations and one hundred miles of gravity sewer lines. The Division inspects the sewer system with closed circuit television equipment and repairs any identified leaks. The Division also cleans an average of 20 miles of sewer lines annually.

Grease Awareness Program

Solid Waste

Water Treatment

The Wastewater Treatment Division (850-833-9633) maintains the sewer plant to treat all wastewater the City generates. On average, 2.3 million gallons of waste flows through the plant each day. The sewer plant treats wastewater to a standard that allows for the byproduct to be used to irrigate the City's golf courses.

Water Distribution

The Water Distribution Division (850-833-9613) is responsible for maintaining 113 miles of water mains; 10,400 service lines, valves, and water meters; and 700 fire hydrants.

Water Operations

The Water Operations Division (850-833-9630) maintains the City's nine potable water wells, five elevated water storage tanks, and four ground water storage tanks. The Division is responsible for ensuring that the drinking water in Fort Walton Beach meets strict State and federal regulations, and that there is sufficient pressure and storage to meet domestic and fire fighting needs.
