Building Permits

The Building Division is a one-stop shop for all construction permit and inspection needs. The division reviews construction plans, issues permits, and performs the necessary inspections to ensure building projects are built safely and in compliance with state and local codes and regulations helping to create a vibrant, livable, and safe-built community. Whether you are remodeling a home, building your dream house, or constructing a high-rise building, we look forward to serving you.

Mission Statement

The MISSION of the City of Ft Walton Beach Building Department is to promote the general health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Ft Walton Beach, to assist the citizens with the code and permit process, to work with developers and contractors in achieving their goals, and work with other City departments for a coordinated effort. We strive to achieve these goals and contribute to the overall mission of the City by:

  • Administration and compliance of the codes and standards from the Florida Building Code that regulate building construction.
  • Administration and compliance of the City of Ft Walton Beach Code of Ordinances & Land Development Code as they relate to building and properties located in the City.
  • Provide information to the public and to assist them in understanding and the application of the adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Insure that those individuals and companies that do business in the City meet the regulatory standards set forth in the building code and local ordinances for the business and occupation in which they are operating.
  • Participate in the preservation of historic resources as outlined in the City Ordinances and state preservation guidelines.
  • Promote energy conservation by incentivizing the construction of Energy Efficient Buildings in the City.

Zoning & Building

The Zoning and Building Division (850-833-9605) employs certified plan reviewers and State certified building inspectors who ensure that the City's adopted land development and building codes are met. The Division issues building permits and provides inspection services in all facets of construction, including building, signs, fences, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and gas.

The Community Development Block Grant Division (850-833-9651) administers funds received under the federal Community Development Block Grant program for residential rehabilitation and related programs.

Neighborhood Services

Neighborhood Improvement strives to preserve and enhance the quality of the community by developing a partnership between the residents and the City.

Through the development of these partnerships, we hope to promote and foster participation and communication from residents, Neighborhood leaders and City representatives to enhance and maintain the appearance, character, and community spirit of our Neighborhoods.

Objectives

  • To create a partnership between the City and its Neighborhoods in order to provide the tools and resources to address the Neighborhoods' concerns and issues.
  • To strengthen and coordinate the various City Departments' responses to Neighborhood problems and requests for assistance.
  • To educate residents and Neighborhoods about the organizational structure of the City and its services, resources and procedures.
  • To ensure the limited resources of the City are directed to the highest priorities of the Neighborhoods.
  • To encourage and facilitate Neighborhood Pride and enhance the involvement of residents in taking responsibility for and solving issues and concerns in their Neighborhoods.

Each individual neighborhood Capital Improvement Plan was compiled from the "Adopted Budget FY 2005-06 Capital Improvements Plan".

The Community Redevelopment Agency hired a consultant to work with the City and the residents and business owners in the Beal Parkway Neighborhood to develop a Neighborhood Action Plan. The project started in March and has had multiple meetings with community leaders and the public at large. The Plan was submitted to the City Council and approved at their January 10, 2006 meeting.
